Seer, the mystic, Miss Fortune, Shihime. All words used to describe the mysterious woman that walks with the dead. A legend that surrounds the Au Ra that wanders the streets of Kugane at night; hood pulled tight around her olive skin, her ink black hair a canopy against her stark white eyes — the pupils missing. Yet she stares all the same, & she understands. She sees what you fear the most, what was once loved, what is longed for. Secrets cannot be hidden from her, not for long.There are rumors of how she came to be, where she comes from, her powers. Yet it is perhaps the truth that is the most unfortunate — the truth those will never know. The women in her family are a long line of seers, sought after for their abilities to accurately read into the future — and enslaved for the very same reason. As her grandmother did for her mother, Shihime's mother did to her. A curse — or a blessing — to keep her hidden from the greater world. Not even her home country knew of her birth, though complicated. Since her birth, Shihime lived in isolation. She did not play with children her age, & she was not allowed out or near windows. It was her two oldest brothers that kept her company, telling her stories of the world outside their home, of how children laughed & danced, & people fell in love. She longed for it — longed to see it, & to experience it. But she knew better than to make her mother angry. She loved Shihime, & Shihime loved her just as well.The invasion of Doma turned their world upside down. Seeking the family of seers, their father died to protect them, giving them all a chance to escape. As the raft was pushed into the sea, her mother didn't join them. Resigning herself to death to join her husband, she waved to her children. Shihime's brother's screamed & cried themselves raw, silencing themselves when finally arriving at the true ship. There was no doubt to her that they looked a melancholic group. Her oldest did his best to appear strong, taking charge, & assuming her mother's stance of not letting anyone near his youngest sister. He'd hide her below deck in their room, pulling her hood up tight around her horns, chastising her when she went to pull the h&le to every knock, & forced to sit in silence & not raise her head as food was brought to their door.Pirates were pirates, & they could not resist the craving of riches. Her ship understood the importance of getting the siblings away from harm, but other ships did not. The cannon fire shook her from her sleep, the cool sea breeze knocking her hood off as she lifted her head from the pillow. In her grogginess did she not realize they were under attack. The shouts of the men above her growing more concerned, & more cannon fire followed. She thought it was a dream, swinging her legs from the bed to take a closer look. The searing pain of wood shattered in her calf brought her to the sick reality that this wasn't a dream at all — it was happening, & she was alone in the room, watching as the water rose — or rather, as the ship was sinking. “ Sota! Kaiyo! ” her voice had called, limping to the door. The water rushed at her feet, rising to her legs, burning the wound. She wept, slamming her fists against the door. Help! Help me! was all she could think, all she could muster to scream. She thought she heard her oldest's voice behind the door, but water filled her lungs, & soon all she saw was the dark.Awoken to the smell of smoke & iron, her eyes fluttered open to see the wreck of what was formerly the ship she was on. Surrounded by the wood & tomes the ship was smuggling, as well as the body parts of what she could only assume was once the crew, she pulled herself out of the ocean. Yet strangely, it seemed her leg had healed while unconscious. What was once a searing pain turned into a dull throbbing, the olive skin now turned white with scarring. She couldn't worry about it, she had to figure out what she had to do, if she could do anything. From the trees further from shore, she felt their eyes watching her. Ghosts & specters whispering to each other, knowing her name, beckoning her closer. She hissed, collecting the wood to see what she could make. “ You will help me, or I will not help you. ” was what she spoke. Her hovel soon came to light, built in a cave where she could sleep away from the fauna of the land.Thankfully, she was not without company. She soon earned the affection of a young coeurl, who believed her to be too stupid to hunt for herself. Due to its current size, it could only bring her fowls, & other small creatures. When she adopted him, she gave him the name Eiji, meaning harmony — to symbolize that they could live together without conflict. He proved to be her strongest protector, similar to her brothers when she believed they lived. It was her naivety that cast him out after finding a group alive after another shipwreck — they came too close to her island, & the rocks had destroyed their ship. A mistake in kindness she learned she would never make again. The clothes she had once worn now torn from her, hugging herself to spare the embarrassment. In her rage, she finally realized how powerful she truly was. Cursing the men around her to squeal & weep not as men, but as animals. Swine. The crunching of their bones leading way to screams of agony. Her smile the last thing they would remember as their minds turned simple, & their hands & feet cloven. Hardening her heart, she vowed to never allow herself to be weak again.It was another six years of isolation before she realized she could not live off the animals Eiji brought her, or consume the swine of the men who had hurt her any longer. Fashioning a raft of the new wrecked ship, Shihime ventured to Kugane for the first time, wandering the black markets for simple spices & herbs. She had no gil to offer, so instead she spoke of her ability to read tea leaves into the future. She could answer any question asked with an accuracy not seen before. Building herself a reputation as a seer & healer among the downtrodden, & a threat to the richer. Due to her seldom appearances, she soon became a legend among sailors, & pirates, & anyone who wished to speak to the dead, or needed a fortune told. It was rumored that when she came, a mist spread over night, brought by the mystic, so her spells could not be replicated, & her appearance muddled.
